Making websites for schools…

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Yesterday me and Mattias started to try out the application “Moodle”. This is an app that you can use too make pretty slick websites aimed for schools. To get going with Moodle you have to have a LAMP (Linux, Apache, Mysql, and PHP) installation on your computer. And of course you have to make a blank database for Moodle to work with as well. Once you have this you just simply install and configure it and voilá; you now have a pretty boring site which is quite ugly but with a lot of functionality.

The “Beautiful” default theme in Moodle

Of course we didnt settle for that, so we downloaded a few themes for my Moodle site, unpacked it in the theme section of moodle, and talk about upgrade……

There are really nice themes though…

The functionality of this app is pretty good too, you can add courses, students, make quizes, post information, make a course forum, and a lot more.

So all in all I would say a pretty nice app, that I would imagine a lot of schools would want too get their hands on.

My first post…

so who am I?; my name is Kevin Nylund and I usually go to school at EC Utbildning in Helsingborg where I study linux (and some unix). At the moment though, I have my LIA (lärande i arbete) which is my schools version of a co-op.

I am doing this here at Gnutiken and so far I really enjoy it. To make it even better I have my classmate Mattias with me here as well.

So far I have been playing around with Drupal which is a pretty comprehensive application for creating and managing homepages. To make this work I had to start up a webserver (Apache2), and then I added php5 to it, as well as mysql so I could create my database which Drupal uses to create the homepage.

Once in drupal I got a bit overwhelmed since there is just so many options to explore, and as a new user I dove right in and tried….well almost everything I believe.  But my fun didnt stop there since you can add more options, and compability, and all kinds of stuff with the help of modules. Modules basically adds more functionality to the existing Drupal installation on your server, i.e. you can add a module to get better security options on the existing blog function. The kicker is that there are thousands of these modules which makes it pretty nice since there is always something for everything. in the end me and mattias did a pretty nice homepage which unfortunately isnt public (so you cant see it….).

So whats the plan for today….well I thought about digging some into the basic configuration of wordpress…as well as trying out this blog that actually uses wordpress (which im doing right now), and also look into the basic setup of Gnutikens Tiki.

so yea…enough for now…over and out…
